Sounds like an electrical problem, maybe the voltage regulator. If the battery isn't being charged the bike (any bike) will backfire like mad as it dies because the spark is too weak and fuel/air mixture goes into the hot pipe. If the dealer put in a new battery and it went dead this soon take it back. He didn't check the charging system like any reputable mechanic would.
I agree with DDD, find another mechanic. Doesn't have to be a dealer, there are independent shops that are usually much better than dealers.
